Vegas Lines: Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (1/20)

January 20th, 2012

PRO BASKETBALL — January 20

L.A. LAKERS at ORLANDO
(Vegas Lines: Magic -3.5, Total 180) — The Lakers were never really that heavily in the game last night against the Heat, and they have suffered a little bit in the last two games from the result of what happens when Kobe Bryant isn’t red hot. Bryant, who has a wrist injury and has now had about $75 million taken from him in a divorce settlement, has gone 15 for 43 in his last two contests, after scoring 40 points in four straight games. The Lakers have taken the short trip for the second end of the back-to-back here, and they have lost five of their first six road games against the Vegas lines. Defense is usually something that works on the road, and so we don’t expect them to be out of this game. But Dwight Howard, one of the few legitimate centers in the NBA, is putting up monster numbers; against Golden State a week ago he went to the free throw line 39 times, and in the last four games he’s had 75 rebounds. The Magic could probably get a lot for him in a trade eventually; for the time being, he’ll teach Andrew Bynum a lesson.

Vegas Lines: Indianapolis Colts at New England Patriots (12/4)

December 4th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — December 4

INDIANAPOLIS at NEW ENGLAND

(Vegas Lines: Patriots -20.5, Total 48.5) –Tom Brady has tossed ten interceptions this season, but none of them have come in the last three weeks, and if you take a look at his yards per attempt, he is getting closer to those levels where he was at the beginning of the season, when he was oh so hot. Is this really the week for Indy to switch defensive coordinators? No, but it has happened anyway. The Colts scapegoated Larry Coyer and replaced him with Mike Murphy,

Brady’s pace would put him at 5,276 yards and 40 touchdowns by season’s end, and that would be MVP territory if not for a guy named Aaron Rodgers. In the confusion, what will happen? More blitzing? Maybe, but Brady can beat some of that stuff with short throws. Indianapolis has not been good at getting opponents off the field (Allowing 47.7% on third down). With the posted number, you may have to look at this like a college game, where one team can name the score if it wants. Up until this recent three-game string, the Pats hadn’t won any games by more than two TD’s. But can Dan Orlovsky, who gets the QB start for the Colts, offer some resistance in the way of generating some offense?

JAY’S PLAY: NEW ENGLAND -20.5 *

Vegas Lines: Clemson Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks (11/26)

November 26th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 26

CLEMSON at SOUTH CAROLINA

(Vegas Lines: South Carolina -4, Total 49.5) — Yes, they have bigger fish to fry next time out in the ACC title game against the winner of the Virginia Tech-Virginia game. But this one is a big, huge revenge game for the Tigers, who dropped last year’s game 29-7 at home. This year the situation has changed, as Tajh Boyd has had a whole year under his belt as the starting quarterback, and Clemson welcomes Sammy Watkins back to the lineup. If you want to get an idea of the freshman’s impact, he has caught 68 of Boyd’s passes for over 1000 yards, and had five games where he gained over 100 yards. Over the second half of the season, South Carolina has tumbled when seriously challenged, and since the romp over out-manned Kentucky, Connor Shaw has two TD passes and five INT’s, if you don’t count the “exhibition” against The Citadel last week.

JAY’S PLAY: CLEMSON +4 **

Vegas Lines: Vanderbilt Commodores at Tennessee Volunteers (11/19)

November 19th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 19

VANDERBILT at TENNESSEE

(Vegas Lines: Vanderbilt -1.5, Total 45) — Vanderbilt finds itself on a roll right now, with five straight covering efforts, during which time the Commodores have averaged 32 points a game. There is no question that this has coincided with the insertion of Jordan Rodgers at quarterback. Aaron’s brother has thrown four TD passes in the last couple of games and has 305 rushing yards on the season. Tennessee does not appear to have the kind of secondary that will offer a whole lot of existence (just six INT’s). And keep an eye on running back Zac Stacy, who has had 510 yards in the last four. Vandy qualifies for a bowl with a win here; Tennessee gets a step closer, but the Vols have been going in a different direction, with five losses in the last six, albeit to the class of the SEC.

Vegas Lines: New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons (11/13)

November 13th, 2011

PRO FOOTBALL — November 13

NEW ORLEANS at ATLANTA

(Vegas Lines: Pick’em, Total 50) — If you are talking about a battle of weapons, the Saints are going to be sitting with the edge, as the Falcons don’t have the multitude of receivers, or the explosive third-down back (Darren Sproles) that New Orleans has. But Atlanta’s front-line talent is still pretty impressive. Julio Jones, the rookie, is averaging 17.5 yards a catch. Tony Gonzalez is having another Tony Gonzalez-type season; there is Roddy White, and Michael Turner (4.4 ypc) and Jacquizz Rodgers, who is sort of a Sproles-in-training.

Over the last three seasons, the Falcons have suffered only five defeats in the Georgia Dome. One of those was to Philadelphia. Two were to Green Bay, and the other two came at the hands of New Orleans. as long as we are talking about home venues, however, something more needs to be said; Drew Brees has thrown a lot more as the visitor, his passer rating is 30 points lower, and he has an even ratio of eight touchdowns to eight interceptions. Atlanta defends the run a lot better, and they are also desperate to get some traction in the NFC South.

JAY’S PLAY: ATLANTA pick **

Vegas Lines: Central Florida Knights at Southern Miss Golden Eagles (11/12)

November 12th, 2011

COLLEGE FOOTBALL — November 12

CENTRAL FLORIDA at SOUTHERN MISS

(Vegas Lines: Southern Miss -9, Total 52) — There is no mistaking the different directions these teams have gone in. While UCF has lost three of four games, falling in road trips to SMU and UAB, of all people, along with Tulsa at home, Southern Miss has been on a surge that has brought them six straight covers. The Knight shave had an increasingly difficult time scoring points, as QB Jeff Godfrey has gotten no better than lukewarm support form leading rusher Brynn Harvey (244 yards last four games), and capable attacks have demonstrated that their stop unit can be penetrated.

This Golden Eagle team brings much balance to the table, averaging 207 yards rushing and 244 passing, and senior quarterback Austin Davis does not have many games where he makes multiple mistakes. Penn State got all the headlines this week, but there has been much confusion around the UCF campus, as the athletic director stepped down in the midst of a recruiting scandal.
